AOKP è al lavoro insieme a Xiaomi per la nuova MIUI V7: peccato sia una bufala

Ormai Android Lollipop è stato presentato da tempo, e tutte le custom ROM più importanti si sono adattate a questa nuova versione del robottino verde, gli unici assenti sono i ragazzi del team di AOKP (Android Open Kang Project) che non aggiornano la loro ROM da ottobre scorso

…ebbene quest’assenza è giustificata, infatti AOKP ci fa sapere di essere al lavoro con Xiaomi sulla nuova MIUI basata su Android Lollipop.

AOKP col passare del tempo si è aggiudicato un posto nel podio tra le migliori ROM in circolazione, e non possiamo certo sorprenderci, il firmware offre un’esperienza unica di Android con un altissimo livello di personalizzazione ma senza tralasciare gli aspetti più importanti di una ROM come la fluidità e la stabilità del sistema operativo.

Dal 2013 a oggi la ROM è sempre stata sempre seguita molto dagli sviluppatori che si impegnavano ogni giorno per aggiungere il supporto a nuovi dispositivi e a correggere gli errori sui devices già supportati.

Ma sfortunatamente verso ottobre 2014 il progetto ha iniziato ad andare in rovina, niente aggiornamenti e nessuna notizia dai devolopers. All’epoca questa scomparsa non spaventò molto i fan, che anzi, iniziarono a credere che gli sviluppatori fossero già al lavoro sulle prime build basate su Lollipop; purtroppo questo sogno non si realizzò e mentre Cyanogenmod, Paranoid, OmniROM e gli altri firmware più utilizzati si preparavano a rilasciare le prime nightly con a bordo la nuova versione di Android 5.0, AOKP rimaneva ferma senza dare segni di vita.

Quando ormai tutti avevano perso le speranze in un aggiornamento, gli sviluppatori di AOKP tornano a farsi sentire tramite il loro blog con un articolo intitolato “Down but not out” dove confermava che il team finalmente era al lavoro su un nuovo aggiornamento della ROM, ecco a voi il testo originale:

Hello everybody.

It has been a long long time. A really loooooooooooong time. This is a project very close to our hearts, and we all love hacking around with Android, but I guess real life often catches up. Jobs, college, family.
But I am not writing this to announce we are packing our bags. I am writing this to let you know that we are slowly crawling back into Kangland activities.

Proper lollipop builds, with ROM Control features will take a just a little while longer, but for now, most of the hardware support is up. The Nexus phones, the Xperias, and a few Galaxies are buildable. Most qualcomm devices should take a couple of hours of effort by the maintainers to get working. Right now it is very much AOSP in terms of features, but we are just beginning to port some of our older features back (and hopefully we will soon start writing new ones).

While I announce this, I would also like to remind that the strength of open source projects lie in contributions. We have a gerrit and we welcome anyone to contribute on it, whether it be in helping us to get AOKP on more devices, or to add more unicorn bytes (features).

Happy Kanging

In poche parole l’autore del post annuncia che si metterà al lavoro molto lentamente – grazie al contributo di qualche sviluppatore indipendente – alla ROM basata su Android Lollipop visto che la stragrande maggioranza dei dispositivi da loro supportati sono ormai completamente “compatibili”.

Dopo quasi un mese esatto da questo articolo il team di sviluppatori di AOKP pubblica un ulteriore articolo denominato “King me nao” e in questo caso vengono riportare novità ben più grandi di un semplice aggiornamento:

It is a big day for us at Team Kang, and it gives me immense pleasure to bring this news to all fellow Kanglings. Most of you might have been wondering, why after starting work on lollipop, we have been taking so long to come out with any builds. Well, as it happens, we all were busy working behind the curtains on a project, the details of which have finally been crystallised.

With Cyanogen parterning with various OEMs and OnePlus grabbing hold of the ParanoidAndroid team, the folks at Xiaomi started considering that to have a larger share of the international market, they needed to collaborate with some established custom ROM community, and hence since last year we had been in close talks. With all the pieces of the deal in place, I wish to announce that all Team Kang members are working with Xiaomi on a new and refreshed MIUI 7, which will be finally based on Android 5.1, and be coming on the Mi 5.

MIUI 7, (which the team internally calls codename MiKangy, not to be confused with MiKandi), is a whole new take on the Android UX. The idea behind it is to kang all important features from the top ROMs like CM, PA, Omni and AOKP and create an experience which completely submerges the user in his own world. The UI will evolve with the user, and thus a few months after usage, the UI of each Mi 5 phone will be different – personalised to the traits of it’s individual user.

MarcLandis, who was leading development on AOKP, has been appointed to lead MiKangy technically, while Zaphod will be overlooking the product development. Only yesterday they were found discussing how this project will shoot an arrow through the knee of CyanogenMod and snatch it from Cyanogen, even before Kirt McMaster is able to snatch Android from Google, and of course we have a few inside men in form of Roman and Tom to pull that off. From the rate at which development is going on, I believe this can very well be true.

Loyal Kanglings who have been waiting impatiently for AOKP Lollipop builds should not lose heart though. We will continue to devote time to AOKP, and builds will come soon. This new collaboration with Xiaomi is an entirely new project and should not be considered as having an effect on the future of AOKP.

UPDATE : If you have not seen it through yet, gotcha!! Well, this was an April Fools prank. It was fun trolling all of you Kanglings, and best of all, it was fun getting some tech blogs to actually believe this was true. The ball rolled down the hill so much that Xiaomi contacted us, and explicitly asked us to add this little clarification. 😀
